Civic Education Chatbot

Overview

This project makes voting information accessible to all citizens through a conversational AI assistant available in multiple languages.

The Challenge

Many citizens, especially first-time voters, immigrants, and those in underserved communities, lack access to clear information about their voting rights and how to exercise them.

The Solution

A chatbot that:

Answers Questions: Responds to natural language questions about registration, voting procedures, identification requirements, and rights.

Provides Localized Information: Uses the user's location to provide relevant information about their specific polling place, registration deadlines, and local ballot measures.

Supports Multiple Languages: Currently available in English, Spanish, and French, with more languages planned.

Escalates Complex Issues: Connects users with human assistance for complex situations or potential voter suppression.

Technical Approach

Built using RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) architecture with a curated knowledge base of voting information. The system uses semantic search to find relevant information and generates responses in the user's language.

Current Status

The chatbot is currently being piloted in partnership with civic organizations ahead of upcoming elections. We are expanding the knowledge base and adding support for additional languages.
